About
Gloria Pannka is one of a new generation of artists continuing the legacy of the renowned Hermannsburg School of watercolour painters. Gloria is the daughter of Claude Pannka, significant artist and a contemporary of Albert Namatjira’s.
Like Ivy Pareroultja and Lenie Namatjira, Pannka works through the Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra: Many Hands Art Centre. This art centre was established in 2003 to foster the Western Arrernte descendants of the Hermannsburg School of painters and can be credited with a revival of their style of painting.
Gloria was taught to paint by her father and her works evidence the subtle tones and fine details for which he was recognised. Her detailed works offer a composed view of country, gently coloured and seemingly imbued with calmness. Not often associated with our harsh interior. ‘Behind Ellery Creek Big Hole’ 2009 depicts the significant tourist destination of Ellery Creek in the West MacDonnell Ranges. However, rather than depict the waterhole favoured by tourists, Pannka focuses on the surrounding Western Arrernte country that is her home, in a manner which evokes the nostalgia of memory.
