  • About

Schmeisser is one of the most accomplished European printmakers to have made Australia his home in recent decades. Appointed to head the Printmaking Department of the Canberra School of Art in 1978, until his retirement a few years ago, his influence as an artist and teacher has been far reaching. A student of Paul Wunderlich in Hamburg, he has also studied and taught at the Kyoto City University of Arts, Japan, for extended periods and undertaken residencies or fellowships in Israel, China and the USA. His work, with its brilliant control over technique, reflects his training and his interest in different cultures, including his birthplace (Pomerania) and also where he has travelled, lived and taught (Japan, the Middle East, Cambodia, Australia, Antarctica). Ladakh is in Kashmir, northern India.
