  • About

Kevin Namatjira continues the legacy of the Hermannsburg School of watercolour painters. Namatjira, learnt his painting techniques from his father Maurice Namatjira, the son of famed watercolourist, Albert Namatjira. Kevin Namatjira was raised on his Country at Ntaria/Hermannsburg, but now lives in Mparntwe/Alice Springs. He works through Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands art centre, which supports many of the descendants of the founders of the Hermannsburg School of painting.

Living away from Country, Namatjira paints from memory, from what he has seen and from images he has stored in his mind. 'Outside Haasts Bluff, near Mt Liebig' 2015 depicts the western edge of the ubiquitous MacDonnell Ranges and provides a clear view of these majestic ranges in stylised detail and brilliant colour. Interestingly the gum tree in the foreground and distant mountain range are painted in a style more synonymous with classic Hermannsburg painting, creating an interesting juxtaposition.
