Zhou Yan (1832-1905), a native of Fuchun in Zhejiang province, was a well known painter of the late 19th century. The painting, depicting the popular theme of scholars gathering, according to Zhou’s own inscription, was painted after the 19th century artist Gai Qi’s (1773-1828) brush model.
