About
May Marsden was born at Church-Stoke, Montgomeryshire, Wales and studied under Fred Simmonds at Wirksworth, Derbyshire and the Derby Central School of Art. She was awarded a teacher's certificate at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington, London in 1897. She arrived in Australia in 1913 with her parents and settled in Sydney. She taught at a number of schools and was appointed a lecturer in art at Sydney Teachers College in 1915, where she remained until 1941; her students included James Gleeson, Rah Fizelle and Bernard Smith who remembers her keen interest in the modern movement. She exhibited with the Australian Watercolour Institute in Sydney.
A second etching 'Pyrmont Bridge' and a watercolour 'Magnolias' is in the Gallery's collection. 'The boat pool, Newcastle' was exhibited in 1929 with the Australian Painter-Etchers' Society, Sydney.
