About
Turnbull’s paintings from the early 1950s often featured figures moving. He has said that he was interested in the implication of movement, and this he achieved through his use of gestural line.
While living in Paris in the late 1940s, Turnbull became friends with Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. 'Untitled (walking figures)' relates to Giacometti’s work, and possible Marcel Duchamp's famous 'Nude Descending a Staircase' 1912 while also speaking to the artist’s involvement with the Independent Group in London where he exhibited alongside collection artists Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton.
