About
Ana Maria Pacheco studied sculpture while she was a young student in Brazil. She was most influenced by the well-known architect and Brazilian Baroque sculptor O Aleijadinho (b. Antonio Francisco Lisboa, 1738-1814). He was born in Minas Gerais to a Portuguese architect father and an Afro-Brazilian slave mother, and his buildings and sculptures still exist in Brazil. This small carved sculpture shows influences from O Aleijadinho, particularly the subtle emotional strength found in his mystical and divine religious sculpture.
