About
The seal in the lower right corner reads wang xing shi zhen – forget about the form and pursue the essence – exemplifies the approach to art taken by Kang Ning. The rooster’s domineering demeanour is indicated by his red crest and wattle, sharp beak, strong feet and focused gaze, all produced using simple lines and dots. His dark feathers painted with varied tones of ink while the yellow orchid flower brings the image to life.
Kang Ning, born in Liaoning province in northern China, studied flower-and-bird painting in the loose and free daxieyi style (literally greater writing ideas or emotions) for ten years under master painter Li Kuchan (1899–1983). Kang was also an admirer of the Qing dynasty painter Zheng Xie (also known as Zheng Banqiao,1693–1766) whose work inspired the yellow orchid. The orchid is one of the four plants, together with plum blossom, bamboo and chrysanthemum, that symbolise four virtues of a gentleman in traditional Chinese culture.
