About
A tiny spider, the expansive web around it and the dark leaves in the top right corner of the painting create a sense of tension. The painting is typical of the work of Ding Yanyong who is known for using simple lines and sparse composition to create seemingly effortless images of familiar subjects. In his minimalist approach of expressing the essence of nature, Ding was greatly influenced by master Zhu Da (1626–1705) who lived two centuries before him.
Ding was born in Guangzhou and started his formal art education at the Western Painting Department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts (present day Tokyo University of the Arts). Later he became an advocate for the rejuvenation of Chinese ink art. He believed that ‘Chinese art is superior in the sense that its artistic expressions are limitless – because it is not tied to any exterior form’.
