About
Fish are an essential component of the Lunar New Year celebrations in China, either in banquets or as gifts to friends or family. The inscription at the left of the painting indicates the artist painted these two fish in the new spring of the jiazi year (1984) to mark the arrival of the New Year.
Cui Zifan began painting in childhood and was mentored by the esteemed artist Qi Baishi (1864–1957). However, it was during his two decades working at the Beijing Fine Art Academy that Cui Zifan systematically studied traditional Chinese flower-and-bird ink painting in the daxieyi style (literally greater writing ideas or emotions) He combined the simple, vigorous lines with changes of ink tones to create vibrant pictures such as this image of two lively fish.
