  • About

'Playground for baby storms - infant meteorological disturbances. Really like a place where the weather of the world is germinated and ready to go out and wreak havoc. It's one of the richest paintings I've done', Gleeson quoted in Renée Free's unpublished catalogue of James Gleeson's work.

Two motifs that frequently recur in Gleeson's late work are internal bodily organs (viscera) and water. The gentle lapping of water on a beach recalls his boyhood experience at Terrigal and later holidays at Perigean on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
