  • About

Hideta Kitazawa is internationally recognised for his expertise and adventurous approach to contemporary mask-making. His masks are chiselled by hand before being painted and lacquered. This mask is of a supernatural tengu. Recognisable by their long noses, bright red skin and expansive bird-like wings, tengu are experts in magic and the martial arts. They are the legendary teachers of Japan’s most celebrated warriors and have been popular characters in theatre and visual art since the Edo period (1603–1868).
