  • About

Brent Harris undertook a residency at the Tyler Print Institute, Singapore in 2004, the first Australian to do so. He spent a month working with Richard Hungerford, a master paper maker and Eitaro Ogawa, with whom he editioned these prints.

In Singapore he experimented with the technique of jigsaw woodcut - most famously used by Edvard Munch. The Deities includes images of key figures in world religions - Jesus, Buddha and Ganesha, printed from blocks in three iterations per deity.

The images are still and contemplative, enhanced by the shared motif in each figure of closed eyes. These works, as well as the other paper pulp works Harris made in Singapore represent a breakthrough in his practice in which broken surfaces, painterly texture and bright colour entered his work for the first time.
