About
Elisabeth Cummings’ paintings have been described as ‘... less representations than … radical metaphors or equivalences’ with her favoured subjects or motifs – landscape, interiors and still life – elided into abstraction with a focus on colour, form and an intuitive exploration of the painting process.
Cummings has maintained a sustained practice of monotype (a synthesis of painting and printmaking) over decades, extending her language of painterly abstraction into smaller works on paper. The monotypes are made collaboratively with custom printers – this work was printed at Whaling Road Studio, North Sydney.
Flag 2011 is a nuanced and highly sophisticated work that has its roots in still life, distilled into a poetic evocation of sensation and atmosphere. Here, the forms are made abstract, their existences refined to the most notational and sparing marks and tones. -
