Picasso
Jeff Koons, et al.
Art Magazine Ads 1988-1989
Picasso was one of the first modern artists to become a popular-culture celebrity. In recent times this notion of the artist as celebrity and commercial brand has become firmly established. Koons – a noted collector of Picasso’s late, erotic works – both embodies and parodies this cultural phenomenon in his work. In this series of appropriated advertising images, which originally appeared in high-profile art magazines, Koons both lampoons and exploits celebrity culture, particularly the way it has been embraced (post-Picasso) by the art world. In a recent Picasso exhibition catalogue, Koons wrote, ‘Picasso’s work ultimately connects to archetypes and represents the truly profound in humanity; it informs us of our past and the parameters of possibility of what it means to be human.’
