Edgar Degas, et al.

Dancer looking at the sole of her right ... 1900-1910, cast 1919-1921

Degas’ work was a constant source of fascination for Picasso. In the 1950s, he began collecting a series of the older artist’s monotypes and in his final years developed a series of etchings inspired by them, inserting the imagined figure of Degas into the compositions. This was Picasso’s most direct homage to another artist, but his work always had close affinities with that of Degas. They shared an interest in the theatre as a subject and a life-long obsession with depicting the female figure in intimate contexts such as bathing, dressing and grooming. Many of Picasso’s bronze sculptures also echo Degas’ distinctive, sensuous hand-modelling.
