South Asia

As a Gallery, we seek to represent the great classical traditions of South Asia from ancient times through to the present. An extremely rich collection of varied media and traditions is evolving, with a focus on the faiths of South Asia, most notably Hinduism and Buddhism.

Our holdings of the arts of South Asia – India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – contain some iconic works, particularly stone and bronze sculptures which are on permanent display in our upper Asian gallery. Art inspired by religious traditions includes fine sculptural works relating to the Hindu deities Vishnu, Shiva and Devi (the Goddess), as well as Gandharan Buddhist sculptures. Paintings, textiles and ritual implements also form part of our collection, extending to contemporary works.
