Anne Ryan on curating the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition

Jul. 17, 2019

The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is Australia’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. Curator Anne Ryan gives us a unique insight into her process of curating and hanging this exhibition. Sydney artist Tony Costa is the winner of the 2019 Archibald Prize for his portrait of artist Lindy Lee, a leading contemporary Australian artist herself. Her art practice explores her Chinese ancestry through the philosophies of Taoism and Zen Buddhism.
