What is Symbolism?

A beginner’s guide to Symbolism, from its origins in Europe to Australia

This short, illustrated talk will introduce the concept of Symbolism as it developed in Europe in the 1880s, influencing the Australian artists in our current exhibition. Symbolism was not so much a movement as a set of ideas or values that were manifested in literature, music and art of the late 19th century.

The talk is designed as a primer for visiting the exhibition and finishes in time for those who wish to join the 1pm exhibition tour.
