Study morning: The Andes and the Incas

With Christopher Carter

Join archaeologist Christopher Carter for an introduction to the Incas.

When the Spanish arrived in South America in the 16th century, the Incas controlled an empire with a capital in the Peruvian Andes. It extended through much of the Andes, from what is now Columbia in the north to Chile in the south.

Theirs was a spectacular culture with amazing monumental architecture, fine ceramics and textiles as well as gold and silver. However, the Incas, as a significant cultural entity, were only around for a few centuries before the arrival of the Spanish. Their culture was built on the developments that had taken place over thousands of years by those who preceded them. This introduction will provide an overview of the Andean region and its cultural development.

In 2014, Chris will lead tours to Chile and Peru for the Art Gallery Society of NSW. Find out more
