Peter Griffen workshops 2012

Weekend painting workshops at the artist's studio

Join Peter Griffen in his studio for a weekend of hands-on experimental, abstract and semi-abstract painting. Many acrylic painting techniques will be demonstrated, with a particular emphasis on composition, line, strong colour and collage. Simple projects will be set and participants will be encouraged to work at their own rate and in their own way, allowing themselves to be guided by the painterly effects that they produce. Intuition, self-expression and individuality will be encouraged.

Meet Peter in the Society member’s lounge at 11am on the Friday and go on a journey of discovery around the Gallery, where Peter will highlight specific key works of interest relating to the workshop activities. This will finish at about 1pm. The workshop times at the Leichhardt studio on Saturday and Sunday are 9.30am – 4pm.

Morning tea, prepared on the premises, is served along with a gourmet lunch with wine. Please inform us of any personal dietary requirements.

Acrylic paint, brushes and acid free cartridge paper are supplied. Participants may bring their own brushes, canvases and paper if they wish. Aprons are available.

Ways of abstracting 1

Working from images created using the imagination and images created by referencing the physical environment, different approaches to make abstract paintings will be demonstrated: anything from 'realistic’ drawing through to expressionist abstract splashes, dripping, scraping and collaging.

Friday 24 February 2012 11am – 11am

Free-form portraiture

The purpose of this workshop is to investigate different approaches to creating the portrait. Participants will be shown a combination of carefully observed drawing, energetic drawing and lively painting techniques in an effort to set them free to search for the likeness in an investigative, undisciplined way.

Please note price increase as class includes life model: $370 non-members / $320 members

Friday 13 April 2012 11am – 11am

Coastal landscapes

Views across the ocean and along the coast, views of harbours and estuaries, from above and below, can all be considered. The emphasis is on experimentation. Reference material such as photos and drawings can be used, but encouraged more than anything will be imaginative processes, involving free use of colour, shapes – both referenced and invented – and whimsical decision making, to lead to unexpected outcomes.

Friday 24 August 2012 11am – 11am

More Ways of abstracting

In this workshop you will ‘take a line for a walk’ and enter the world of abstraction. Use a variety of different approaches from splashes, dripping, scraping and collaging, to create a truly imaginative abstract work.

Friday 12 October 2012 11am – 11am

Free form figure painting and drawing

Although we will be working from the life model, anatomical detail will not be an issue. Rather, this approach is seen as leading to a more analytical study of the figure, starting from the ‘deep end of the pool’. Experience is not necessary, but for those who are experienced, this expressive workshop is a useful way to loosen up.

Please note price increase as class includes life model: $370 non-members / $320 members
