Old masters' secret messages

Eddy Batache discusses masterpieces from the Louvre

Old masters are not to be appreciated in a hurry. Each work carries a few elements to be deciphered. Dr Eddy Batache analyses a dozen paintings from the Louvre, explaining hidden symbols and secret messages of Mantegna, Botticelli and Bosch along with much less known artists such as Jean Cousin and Lubin Baugin.

Batache is a Paris-based lecturer and writer. He lectured on French literature and art at the French Department at the Sydney University between 1965 and 1973 and has published books in French on surrealism and Eastern philosophy. A regular contributor to art publications in France and Australia, he also spends time studying the works in the vast collections of the Musée du Louvre.
