Live music: Rainbow Chan 陳雋然

Sweet, dark and glitchy

Indulge in a live performance of Rainbow Chan’s idiosyncratic brand of pop. An eclectic mix of electronic and acoustic textures, Rainbow creates live loops from unlikely instruments. A singer, producer and multi-disciplinary artist, Rainbow Chan won FBi Radio’s Northern Lights Competition in 2011 and has toured extensively around Australia and internationally. While classically trained in saxophone, piano and choral singing, Rainbow’s fondest musical memories are of family day trips in a squishy car, singing along to mix-tapes sent from her grandmother in Hong Kong. From Chinese folksongs to Western ballads, Grandma’s hodgepodge tapes would have a lasting impression on her music. Rainbow has been interested in the idea of intersections and hybridity from an early age; as a result, her work is a delicious collage of seemingly disparate sounds and cultures.
