International Curators’ Panel: Making art public

Three visionary curators explore the impact of public art in a changing global context

Join us as we welcome three visionary curators and directors from leading international art institutions – Jessica Morgan, Director, Dia Art Foundation, New York; Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund, New York, and James Lingwood , co-director, Artangel, London – to examine the continuing international impact and reach of Kaldor Public Art Projects.

In this special panel discussion event, a highlight of our anniversary programming, the three curators reflect on the legacy of the world’s first public art organisation, in conversation with Maud Page, Deputy Director and Director of Collections at the Art Gallery of NSW. Jessica Morgan has been director of Dia Art Foundation since January 2015 and was named Nathalie de Gunzburg Director in October 2017. Since Morgan’s arrival at Dia, the foundation has grown and diversified its collection to include significant works by Mary Corse, Nancy Holt, Robert Morris, Dorothea Rockburne, Kishio Suga, Anne Truitt, and Lee Ufan among others. Alongside an expanded exhibition program, Morgan has continued Dia’s commitment to site-specific commissions, facilitating major new work by artists including Isabel Lewis, Rita McBride and Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and in 2015 realising the first Dia commission outside the continental United States since 1982 with Allora & Calzadilla’s Puerto Rican Light (Cueva Vientos), situated in Puerto Rico.

James Lingwood has been co-Director of Artangel with Michael Morris since 1991. Amongst over 125 Artangel projects produced over the past twenty-five years are Rachel Whiteread’s House (1993–94), Michael Landy’s Break Down (2001), Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgreave (2001) Gregor Schneider’s Die Familie Schneider (2004), Francis Alÿs’s Seven Walks (2005), Roni Horn’s Vatnasafn/Library of Water in Iceland (2007-ongoing), Roger Hiorns’s Seizure (2008), Susan Phillipsz’s Surround Me (2010), Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead in Detroit (2012-ongoing) Cristina Iglesias’s Tres Aguas in Toledo, Spain (2014-ongoing) and Taryn Simon’s An Occupation of Loss (2018) as well as moving-image installations with artists including Yael Bartana, Douglas Gordon, Anri Sala and Sejla Kameric and Tony Oursler.

Nicholas Baume joined Public Art Fund as Director and Chief Curator in 2009. A native of Australia, his curatorial career began here with Kaldor Public Art Projects and later the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. He was Contemporary Curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, before moving to Boston to join the Institute of Contemporary Art as Chief Curator. Baume has curated more than fifty exhibitions with a wide range of significant international artists at different stages of their careers. Author of several major exhibition catalogues, including the recently released Ai Weiwei: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors, he is a frequent public speaker on contemporary art, and has contributed essays and interviews to numerous publications.
