Film screening: Night parrot stories
An ode to the loss of a bird banished in the darkness
Somewhere in the remote deserts of Australia lived an elusive nocturnal bird called the night parrot. Virtually nothing is known of its ecology. It disappeared at the end of the 19th century. Searching for evidence of its existence became a preoccupation for filmmaker Robert Nugent. Night parrot stories was filmed in all of the locations where night parrots once lived, during a time when stories of extinction were everywhere.
This screening of Night parrot stories will be followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director Robert Nugent and Documentary Australia Foundation founder and CEO Mitzi Goldman.
Part of a quarterly series of Australian documentary screenings presented by the Gallery and the Documentary Australia Foundation. The selection of each film will take inspiration from a Gallery exhibition; Night parrot stories is presented in association with the exhibition John Russell: Australia’s French impressionist.
