Curator’s talk: Sidney Nolan centenary

Re-discover one of Australia’s great modern painters

Sidney Nolan was born on 22 April 1917—this year would have been his 100th birthday. Join us to celebrate his centenary year and to discover a new display of Nolan’s extraordinary paintings drawn from the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection.

A towering figure of twentieth-century painting, Sidney Nolan remains a perplexing figure. Although his works have become an indelible part of Australian visual history and identity—especially the iconic Ned Kelly series—their meanings can still appear elusive.

The Gallery’s curator of Australian art, Denise Mimmocchi, will discuss Nolan’s works and their legacy. It’s the first of the Gallery’s planned Nolan Centenary events. Further programs throughout the year will be announced.
