Celebrity talks: John Olsen and his world

Hear from the people who have been inspired by legendary Australian painter John Olsen, as we celebrate the artist and his work in the major retrospective exhibition John Olsen: the you beaut country.

Katie Noonan

One of Australia’s finest vocalists, Katie Noonan is a devotee of John Olsen’s work and chose an image of his 1963 painting Five bells (in the Gallery’s collection) for the cover of her 2015 album Transmutant. Tonight she talks about how his art has inspired her.

Jack Thompson

One of Australia’s most esteemed cinematic stars, Jack Thompson, shares stories arising from his long-term friendship with John Olsen, including their shared love of poetry.

Like John with his distinctive landscapes, Jack has helped forge an Australian cultural identity at home and overseas. He has starred in such classics as The club, Sunday too far away, The man from Snowy River and Breaker Morant.

The team behind ‘John Olsen: a recipe for art’

Food has been a key ingredient in John Olsen’s creativity and his art, from his famous paella paintings to lively sketches in his diaries. The Gallery’s new book John Olsen: a recipe for art is a homage to the pleasures of art and the kitchen, featuring some 40 recipes accompanied by sumptuous images of related artworks, places, family and friends.

Join arts journalist Fenella Kernebone in conversation with author Leanne Santoro, designer Matt Nix and managing editor Julie Donaldson as they share stories of working with John over the past year on the project.

Tim Olsen in conversation with Tim Ross

What is it like to be part of the extraordinary Olsen family? John Olsen’s son Tim, now a respected gallerist and a fixture of the Sydney art scene, delves into the experience of growing up with one of Australia’s favourite artists. He shares family stories with multi-talented media personality Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross.

Nicholas Pounder

Antiquarian bookseller Nicholas Pounder is a dear friend of John Olsen’s. He joins us to discuss his and John’s shared appreciation of poetry and literature, and the poetic references and metaphors throughout John’s work.

Lucio Galletto and Damien Pignolet

John Olsen made a life-changing discovery as a young man: Mediterranean cuisine, ‘the cuisine of the sun’. His friends, chefs Lucio Galletto and Damien Pignolet, will explore this food and how it has influenced John’s work, becoming a key ingredient in his creativity and his art.
