Inspirations from Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize winners and finalists

Join us for this fascinating new series of talks and gain further insight into the creative practices of past winners and finalists of the prestigious Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. Six artists over five weeks will share their unique experiences and discuss how being selected has influenced their artistic journey and future directions. Jane Hutcheon, TV presenter and foreign correspondent and Claudia Chan Shaw, designer, author and presenter will facilitate these insightful conversations revealing just what inspires these artists to create such extraordinary works of art.

Jonathan Dalton and James Drinkwater

In conversation with Jane Hutcheon
Jonathan Dalton was a finalist in the 2017 and 2018 Archibald Prize and the subject of his portrait in the 2017 competition was friend and fellow artist James Drinkwater and his partner and fellow artist Lottie Consalvo. James Drinkwater has been a finalist in the Wynne Prize in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018 and the Sulman Prize in 2016. Jonathan and James will discuss with Jane how their paths have intertwined and what the future holds for these exciting young artists.

Nicholas Harding has had a long-standing relationship with the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes having been awarded the Archibald Prize in 2001 and the People’s Choice Award in 2005. Join Jane and Nicholas as they discuss his career, his influences and what fascinates him about this prestigious award having been a finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes numerous times.

Paul Newton

In conversation with Claudia Chan Shaw
Paul Newton, twelve times Archibald finalist and twice Packing Room Prize winner and People’s Choice Award winner in the 2001 competition, is a well-known Australian portrait artist. Join Paul and Claudia as they discuss his career, his love of portraiture, the connection between subject and artist and the stories behind his subjects.

Wendy Sharpe

In conversation with Claudia Chan Shaw
Wendy Sharpe, winner of the Archibald Prize in 1996 and winner of the Sulman Prize in 1986, is no stranger to this prestigious prize. She is one of Australia’s most awarded artists and has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize six times and in the Sulman Prize fourteen times. Join Claudia and Wendy as they discuss her career influences, highlights and successes.

Del Kathryn Barton

In conversation with Jane Hutcheon
Del Kathryn Barton, winner of the Archibald Prize in 2008 and 2013 and finalist in the Archibald Prize five times, has experienced this prize from both sides having been painted by Marc Etherington in 2015. Join Del and Jane has they discuss her career, her inspiration and the secret to entering a prize-winning portrait.
