Members Art Challenge: Series #1

We are excited to launch our new Art Challenge initiative for Gallery members!

Over the coming weeks we will present you with Art Challenges that will encourage you to practise your art making whilst sharpening your observational skills. Take inspiration from a selection of works in the Gallery's collection.

We hope you enjoy getting hands-on with our Members Art Challenge over the coming weeks.

Art Challenge #6

Take a break

Take a break and create a picture of your favourite meal of the day. Include your utensils and condiments. Notice the colours and shapes of your food and how they are arranged on the plate. Perhaps embellish your work with a decorative tablecloth or placemat.

Why not start a visual food journal and draw your favourite meal every day?

Send us a picture of your culinary creation.

Take a look at these inspirational mealtime works:

Art Challenge #5

Looking out your window

Choose a window in your house or work space and look out. What do you see?

Can you see into a garden, your neighbour’s fence or rooftops? Do you have a view to the ocean, some rolling hills, apartment blocks, or perhaps a cityscape? Compose your work to include the window frame and window dressings. You might like to add some interior objects, flowers on a window sill, or a chair.
Try drawing the same view at different times of the day and notice the changes in light.

Take a look below at these wonderful window views from the Gallery collection for inspiration.

Art Challenge #4

Keep your distance

Physical distancing continues to be a part of our lives with COVID-19.

Create a still life arrangement of three things you stopped using or are using less these days. Maybe your car keys, your Opal card, dancing shoes, your lipstick, your lunchbox?

Arrange them in a ‘physically distant’ composition on your page in your choice of medium.

Another cup of tea

Put the kettle on and let’s have tea for our next creative challenge.

Take out your best china, or your favourite cups and arrange them in a still life composition. Add a vase of flowers or a tablecloth, perhaps?

Take a look at some of the artworks and ceramics in the Gallery's collection for inspiration.
We look forward to receiving your entries!

Tip: Why not send your completed drawing to your friends and family as an invitation to a virtual afternoon tea?

Art Challenge #1

A corner of your room

To kick off the first Art Challenge we are looking at our rooms and home workspaces – places we have been spending a lot more time in lately!

Draw a corner of your room or workspace. What details can you see?

Take note of the perspective of the room. Include doors and windows, desks, chairs, and small items.

Be as detailed as you can. Take note of the shadows.

For inspiration take a look at some of detailed rooms from the Gallery's collection below.
