Join us as we affirm the power of art to connect people through a new online project that opens the Gallery to the world and welcomes in artists, performers, and audiences.
At a deeply challenging time for the arts in Australia, Together In Art is working with artists, performers, educators and our community partners to create meaningful art encounters that offer daily inspiration. From our home on Gadigal land, to your home wherever it may be, we’ll be bringing you new commissions, pocket exhibitions, behind-the-scenes tours, soul-stirring performances, art classes with some of Australia’s great artists, deep dives into the riches of our collection, and much more.
Let’s stand #TogetherInArt, even though we’re physically apart, and find our way through this crisis.

Why Art? A #PassThePaperChallenge from the Youth Collective
This week, we celebrate some of the most vital voices in art – those of young artists and creators. They bring innovative perspectives that open minds to new artistic possibilities, give thought-provoking criticisms that challenge the world to be better, and expand the ways that art can connect us all.
Kicking us off is the Gallery’s Youth Collective, a group of 16-25-year-old art aficionados whose regular event series of workshops, performances and artist talks has been on hold since lockdown.
Here, they come together from Gadigal, Darug, Ku-ring-gai and Bidjigal Country in a #PassThePaperChallenge, to show how they’re staying connected and answer the crucial question – Why art?

Dorrit Black
What’s in the box? Find out in this Together In Art series, which reveals treasures from behind the scenes of our temporarily closed museum. In this video, assistant curator of Australian art Hannah Hutchison offers a close look at the dynamic prints, drawings and printing blocks of pioneering Australian woman modernist Dorrit Black (1891-1951), whose experiments with the new medium of linocut still emanate optimism and energy. Discover how Black discovered her vision, created her prints, and brought her modern vision from Europe back to Australia.
