Saturday 12 September – Sunday 18 October 2020

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery

Ngurambang: district, country, home showcased student work from schools from across Wiradjuri Country. 2020 was a difficult year for schools in our region and the program was adapted to utilise online learning platforms such as YouTube Live where face to face teaching was not possible. Students learnt about Wiradjuri artists and their work and explored ideas of what home means for them through their own creative artmaking. A selection of their work produced culminates in the Ngurambang exhibition.

Gundagai Public School

Gundagai Public School closely studied the work of Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens. Commencing with a collage creation based on ‘Holy Mother and I’. Here they enjoyed the freedom of layering different material types, and exploring colour, shapes and patterns. They then moved on to a close study of the ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ video and photo collection. This work was the inspiration for the photographs. Students thought deeply about what the concepts of home and family meant to them, and narrowed that down to a single word. They then chose a location within the school grounds or home that had special significance to them, and to which they felt a connection. Students then looked at using the word, their own silhouette in that special place to create an image inspired by ‘Mother’s Little Helper’. As a result the Year 6 students now think more deeply about the meaning behind art, rather than pure aesthetics and techniques.
