In my body of work I explore my Chinese identity, using the symbolism and techniques of traditional art forms. Calligraphic ink paintings, paper fans and the colours of black, white and red all traditionally signified wealth and status. Influenced by performance artist Xie Rong as well as Peking Opera, the large-scale photographs, taken in a studio setting under careful lighting conditions, explore the sculptural forms of the hat. My work pays homage to Chinese art forms and speaks directly to my culture.
