Our population is ever-growing, causing a mass expansion within our suburban areas. Sydney’s suburbs feature a vast array of medium density domestic dwellings. The lack of aesthetic consideration in these architectural forms has created an austerity and ugliness in our streetscapes. Through my investigations into the works of Peter O’Doherty and Howard Arkley, as well as explorations of my local area, I began to discover a hidden beauty within the facades of these post-war apartment blocks. My works reinterpret the ugliness of these buildings, reminiscent of my childhood, into surfaces of beauty.
