Charlotte Best Five bells

My work is a meditation on the role of beauty in the negotiation between life and death. Life and death are often viewed as opposites but my work promotes their synthesis through beauty. Beauty is subjective, transient and permanent. Nostalgia and sentimentality are woven into our ideas of life and death. Bill Henson’s ‘Boat and Graveyard’ series has been an indispensable influence on me in the creation of such a nuanced piece, demonstrating the importance of grounding my piece in reality. This prompted me to use cotton watercolour matte, to make tactile and earthly such abstract ideas.
