Sharnie Loija Manhattan - the Himalayas of cityscapes

In my work I wanted to challenge myself and push the boundaries of contemporary drawing practice. I was inspired by Korean artist Hong Seon Jang’s postmodern installations that explore cityscapes using fishing line, string and coloured hot glue. My plan was to suspend my drawings in space – however, this was disastrous! The weight of my large glue drawing was distorting my composition. Influenced by Meredith Woolnough, I decided to suspend my drawing on paper using pins and Japanese seed beads. This enabled me to explore the sculptural possibilities of drawing, delicately casting shadows that enhance my complex open-work compositions. I have taken three of Marco Luccio’s artworks and, using different approaches, reproduced these works in various mediums.
