The Art Gallery of New South Wales recognises the relationship between cultural, heritage and environmental management and acknowledges our responsibility to work collaboratively and in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide leadership on climate issues that impact not just the Gallery but Australia’s cultural heritage and the land on which we work and live.
The Gallery has established a Sustainability Working Group to drive action on climate change and adaption strategies, which will follow the NSW Government’s NSW Climate Change Policy framework.
We have committed to the City of Sydney’s Sustainable Destination Partnership and working with Sustainable Advantage NSW towards the internationally recognised United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
In particular the Gallery is focused on contributing to the following goals:
- Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities: Target 11.4. Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage
- Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production: Target 12.5. By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse
- Goal 13: Climate action: Target 13.3. Improve education, awareness raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaption, impact reduction and early warning
We will build on existing energy saving and waste management initiatives to harness and refine the Gallery’s environmental, social and cultural impact to deliver greater benefits to the community.
