Charles Kerry and the photographers at Kerry & Co. produced a succession of benchmark photographs around the turn of the nineteenth century that speak, even now, to the heart of the Australian experience. By 1898 Kerry's Sydney studio was the largest in the country, producing individual photographs, thematic albums and especially postcards for national and international distribution. 'Mrs Biddel's life-saving class' contains all the elements of the Kerry & Co. style: technical skill, compositional balance and a congratulatory tone.
