
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Three bathers 1913. Art Gallery of New South Wales Foundation Purchase 1984 | As the major source of funds for the acqusition of art work for the permanent collection, the Foundation fulfils a critical role in the life of the Gallery. Since it was established in 1983, the Foundation has purchased 27 important works for the collection, among them Kirchner's Three bathers (pictured), Beccafumi's Madonna and child with St John the Baptist, Giacometti's Femme de Venise VII and Beckmann's Old woman in ermine. Antony Gormley's Haft is the most recent acquisition (2007). Such acquisitions, currently valued at over $50 million have been purchased with the income from the Foundation's invested capital of more than $30 million.
