Ivan Namirrkki and his brother Samuel Namunjdja were
taught to paint by their father, Peter Marralwanga.
He has been working as an independent artist since the
late 1980s creating bark paintings and sculpture. In
2002 Namirrkki and Crusoe Kurddal worked as advisors
for the film ‘Mimi’ produced by
Blackfella films, which featured his mimih carvings.
My father used to paint on bark. He made paintings
of kunj [kangaroos] and kinga [crocodiles], but today,
if you look at my style of painting, I am doing things
somewhat differently. I paint myself, my own individual
style – our land and our spirit.
I paint places. Places where there is ‘spirit’
– our spirit.
