Born in Scotland, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor moved to Australia from Birmingham in September 1999 to take up the position of Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney.
Macgregor began her career as curator and driver of the Scottish Arts Council's travelling gallery, organising exhibitions and taking them on-board a converted bus to venues such as Highland villages, inner city estates, schools, factories, hospitals and even prisons. After a spell at the Arts Council, Macgregor spent 10 years as the Director of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, one of Britain’s leading contemporary galleries.
As Director of the MCA, Macgregor has achieved long-term financial stability for Australia's only dedicated contemporary art museum through a mixture of Government and private funding; introduced free admission through sponsorship by Telstra which has resulted in attendances more than trebling and presented an acclaimed program of exhibitions of work by major Australian and international artists.
The MCA was last year designated Sydney's most 'outstanding attraction' in the inaugural City of Sydeney Business Awards. |
