Earle Backen, one of Sydney’s leading printmakers in the early 1960s, was also an accomplished oil painter and water colourist of portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. He was also an oblate of the Anglican Benedictine Community of St Mark at Camperdown, Victoria for more than twenty years. Art and Christianity, his two great passions, came together in his sacred art – with his beloved Christ Church St Laurence a major beneficiary.
Specifically designed to decorate Christ Church St Laurence, an Anglo-Catholic church in inner Sydney, his Orthodox Art Series was completed over a period of three years at the end of his life. The Series is richly symbolic, drawing on the traditions of Byzantine iconography.
This book catalogues these sacred works as well as some of his other religious art and includes commentary on each picture together with background material contributed by friends and colleagues.
