I always find reading anything by F Scott Fitzgerald a pleasure. He’s use of language is sublime, and his character assassinations really hit the mark. This is one of the great American novels of the 1920’s.
The rich were filthy rich; the parties were lavish to the extreme and running with illegal booze. The love story is one of yearning from afar, we see Gatsby “make” himself as to appeal to his former flame Daisy. Although the love story is an important part of the book, I was left with was Fitzgerald portrayal of a society who did exactly as they wished and damn anyone who comes in their way.
If you intend to see the new movie, I urge you to read the book first and then see the Robert Redford & Mia Farrow film- I feel this version actually does justice to the book, and you won’t hear me say that often.

Jay Gatsby is a self-made man, famed for his decadent champagne-drenched parties. Despite being surrounded by Long Island's bright and beautiful, Gatsby longs only for Daisy Buchanan. In shimmering prose, Fitzgerald shows Gatsby pursue his dream to its tragic conclusion. "The Great Gatsby" is an elegiac and exquisite portrait of the American Dream.
