Appraisal for works you own

The Gallery provides a free appraisal service to members of the public. Specialist staff are available to give their opinion on works of art.

Note

  • All questions except telephone number must be completed.
  • To assist us, please provide as much information as you know about the work of art:
    • artist’s full name and nationality
    • title
    • medium, eg painting on canvas, drawing, print, watercolour
    • description/subject, eg abstract scene, landscape, still life
    • date
    • how the work was acquired
    • any additional information from frame, labels, frame or backing board

Terms and conditions

  1. Enquiries will be answered in order of receipt and availability of appropriate expertise.
  2. Appraisals are limited to THREE artworks per visit.
  3. Appraisals of decorative arts are NOT offered.
  4. Opinions will only be given on works already owned by you and NOT for works you plan to buy.
  5. NO valuations or authentications can be given.
  6. NO opinions can be given on the quality of your own work (ie if you are the artist).
  7. All artworks must be sealed in clear plastic and taped closed, due to the risk of insect infestations. If a work shows signs of insect infestation (eg tiny holes), do NOT bring it in.
  8. The opinions given by the professional staff are their own judgements and no responsibility can be accepted by them or by the Gallery.
  9. Works held for examination will not be held overnight within the Gallery unless requested by staff. All care will be taken with such works but no responsibility can be held for loss or damage.
