Captured in Shanghai, China in 2019, the subject of my illustration is my beloved ā yí (maternal aunt). She experienced her first major medical emergency resulting from a subarachnoid haemorrhage, a medical concern that impacts fewer than 10,000 people per year and carries a mortality rate of up to 65%. Although she survived, an unfair fraction of her physical and psychological wellbeing has been stripped from her. I crafted this piece to honour her resilience and fortitude. It symbolises my admiration for such an astounding and inspirational woman, whom I’m grateful to have in my life.
