John R Walker Flood Creek approaching summer I

archival oil on polyester

168.5 x 345 cm

I have painted the landscape around my home in Braidwood, in the Southern Highlands of NSW, for over a decade. Flood Creek runs through the heart of the Braidwood township and has been a recurring subject in my work.

This painting is about the experience of being in the landscape – of walking and looking. The composition of the work creates multiple viewpoints that piece together a narrative of journeying through a place. The scrawling, lyrical marks play against expansive washes to create a representation that flirts with abstraction.
