Robert Malherbe The Domain after a storm

oil on linen

66 x 56 cm

It’s mostly silent here.
This strip of the Domain between College and
William St, where my studio is.
I didn’t plan to fall in love with this ordinary place
but after ten years of walking through it…
The view, for me, seems to change every month,
and I’m compelled to respond.
I’ve painted this view many, many times and always on site.
I never use photographs.
When I take friends to this spot they cannot reconcile it to
the paintings I’ve made. ‘This view is so ordinary, so common place!’
And I reply, ‘This is where the painter’s work begins.’
