Claire Roberts is a historian of Chinese art, who was senior curator of Asian arts at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney when Jiawei Shen painted this portrait. She is depicted at the museum with the camera of Hedda Hammer Morrison, a photographer who worked extensively in China.
