Entries: 260 (29 selected)
Exhibition dates: 22 January to 27 February 1977
Only selected works were exhibited; each artist could submit up to two works
Brett Whiteley’s winning self-portrait was a turning point as it stretched the definition of portraiture, with the image of the subject himself taking up just a small part of the canvas.
It was a landmark year for Whiteley who also won the Sulman Prize.
