The subject of this portrait by Jack Carington Smith is Alexander Leicester McAulay (1895-1969), professor of physics from 1927 to 1959 at the University of Tasmania. Carington Smith exhibited four portraits of McAulay in the Archibald; this one, now in the Art Gallery of NSW collection, is the third. The others were in 1947, 1950 and 1963.
