Howard Hinton (1866–1948) was a shipping company director, art collector and trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1919 to 1948. He was also a major benefactor to the Gallery, donating over 100 paintings from 1914 onwards. This portrait by George W Lambert was commissioned by the trustees in 1927, in appreciation of his generosity, and acquired by the Gallery in 1928.
